ISL Waste Management: Our Journey
ISL Waste Management is one of the largest independent commercial waste collection and recycling organisations in Northern Ireland.
Since our formation in 2009, we have been committed to the goal of creating a community where all resources are valued and nothing is wasted.
We were one of the first NI companies to achieve zero waste to landfill status and since 2012 all waste collected by our team has been recycled or used to create green energy.
Our Recycling & Resource Management Achievements
Rather than just collecting and disposing of your waste, we work with local businesses, global brands, schools and charities to help reduce the waste they produce. Then it’s about #MakingWasteWonderful; transforming waste into valuable resources, creating healthier communities, cleaner oceans, and a better world for everyone. Here are just a few of our recent achievements.
- 4,000,000 tonnes of CO2 saved through anaerobic digestion in three years.
- 4.5 million trees saved since 2009.
- 100% diversion of waste from landfill since 2012.
- 180,000 tonnes of recovered fibre since 2009.
- 3 million kWh of green energy produced by 2017.
- Through our work with SOS NI we have diverted around £450,000 of food marked for destruction, to local food banks and those in need.
What’s Next for Northern Ireland?
With Brexit looming on the horizon, it is a challenging and uncertain time for the waste management sector. Over half of UK environmental law originated in the EU, as did the majority of product legislation and standards.
We are working with a number of sector and trade specific organisations on lobbying government bodies and decision makers. Through a number of channels, we will work to raise awareness of the environmental implications of Brexit and to help ensure the interests of the sector and the wider environment are promoted by engagement in the debate at EU, UK and devolved levels.
We have so many exciting developments and programmes to come. For example we are currently collaborating with one of NI’s largest coffee bars to find a green solution for their disposable coffee cups. Our team are also liaising with a number of major event organisers, working on minimising the environmental impact and lowering the carbon footprint of large festivals and public events.
We have been visiting and linking up with companies across the UK and as far away as Nairobi, researching, developing and implementing the latest recycling technologies, which will transform how waste is collected, processed and treated.
Our team believes that technology, which helped create much of the overwhelming amount of waste produced over the past few decades, will also be a major part of the solution to the problem.
