8 Ways You Can Go Green This Black Friday
What Is Black Friday?
Black Friday falls on November 24th in 2017. It is always the Friday after the American holiday Thanksgiving. It has traditionally been the busiest shopping day of the calendar year, because it marks the start of the festive season.
Retailers report that the month between Black Friday and Christmas is by far the busiest of the year, with sales typically rising by 30-40% during this period.
Millions of people around the world take part in Black Friday purchasing, offers and mania each year.
What’s The Problem?
With that amount of purchasing comes a serious amount of waste. For shoppers visiting physical stores there are single use bags and plastic wrapping being purchased by the tonne. The problem is no less severe for online purchases. Cardboard boxes, reams of packaging and bubble wrap leads to a LOT of rubbish which often ends up in landfill.
8 Ways To Go Green For Black Friday
1: Try to buy items with minimal or even better, no packaging.
2: Bring your own reusable bags. They’re good for carrying gifts as well as food.
3: If possible buy higher quality items that last. Avoid disposable or cheap products that will be in landfill within the year.
4: Buy fewer items.Do you really need all that stuff anyway?
5: If you can, cycle, take public transport or car share when going to the shops. You could even shop locally to reduce your carbon footprint and support local businesses.
6: Wrap gifts in reusable fabric or gift bags.
7: Shop for experience gifts such as a meal, a trip to the cinema or a spa day.
8: Shop for recycled items. Furniture, jewellery, accessories.
